Alternate Title:
THE TWILIGHT
OF THE GREY
GODS
(both fantastic

Featuring TURLOGH DUBH O'BRIEN
"Spears of Clontarf"
was rejected
by SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE and
Howard rewrote the
story, adding more of
a weird atmosphere.
It was more than just changing
a name here and there,
he actually rewrote the story,
givingit a new title,
"The Grey God Passes."
Under this title
it was rejected by
WEIRD TALES.
In hopes of salvaging
*something* from the
whole affair, REH wrote an
entirely new, contemporary
horror tale titled "The
Cairn on the Headland" which
was based on some of the
same elements.
Baen published "The Grey
God Passes" under
its working title, "The Twilight
of the Grey Gods"

as Chapter 1 for the novel A Gent From
Bear Creek.
All of the chapters of A Gent From Bear Creek
that appeared in THE SUMMIT COUNTY
JOURNAL were altered to spell Breck's name
"Breckenridge"
rather than "Breckinridge," to make it conform
to the name of the town (Breckenridge, Colorado) where
the Journal was published.

"Swords of Shahrazar"

It was originally offered
to VI Cooper for THRILLING
ADVENTURES, somebody
asked for a rewrite, and REH
rewrote the opening significantly.
It was then offered again
to Cooper, who turned it down,
and it was subsequently sold
to Miller with TOP-NOTCH.
The original opening still
exists, as Untitled "(Feel
the edge, dog, . . ."), and is included
in EL BORAK AND OTHER DESERT
ADVENTURES.
