THE COMMENTARY

In the late 1920s and into the 1930s, REH contributed to a little mailing called THE JUNTO.
There was probably only one copy of each issue. It was mailed to each person on the mailing list, who would read the contributions and make comments.
These comments would then be typed up by the editor and included in a future mailing under the heading "The Commentary."
Comments include those retyped by the editor and REH's own typed comments from the mailing list.

CONAN, MAN OF DESTINY

Alternate Title: THE WAY OF THE SWORDS
Alternate Title:  THE ROAD OF THE EAGLES

"The Road of the Eagles" is an REH story and title for which two drafts presently exist.
  1. An early draft that Glenn Lord published in the Donald Grant book ROAD OF AZRAEL as "The Way of the Swords."
  2. A final draft (now at Cross Plains Public Library) that L. Sprague de Camp found and rewrote as "Conan, Man of Destiny," then later published as "The Road of the Eagles."
The L. Sprague de Camp Conan story titled "Conan, Man of Destiny" appears in:

CONAN THE CONQUEROR

Alternate Title: POLITICS AT BLUE LIZARD
Alternate Title: POLITICS AT LONESOME LIZARD

CUPID FROM BEAR CREEK

Alternate Title: THE PEACEFUL PILGRIM (slightly different)

Featuring BRECKINRIDGE ELKINS

This short story was altered slightly to become Chapter 9 of the novel, A Gent From Bear Creek.

All of the chapters of A Gent From Bear Creek that appeared in THE SUMMIT COUNTY JOURNAL were altered to spell Breck's name "Breckenridge"
rather than "Breckinridge," to make it conform to the name of the town (Breckenridge, Colorado) where the Journal was published.

CUPID VS. POLLUX

THE CURLY WOLF OF SAWTOOTH

Alternate Title: A ELSTON TO THE RESCUE;
A ELKINS NEVER SURRENDERS

Featuring BRECKINRIDGE ELKINS; BEARFIELD ELSTON

The version titled “The Curly Wolf of Sawtooth” features Bearfield Elston.

The version titled “A Elkins Never Surrenders” comes from an earlier draft and features Breckinridge Elkins. See the history below.

All of the chapters of A Gent From Bear Creek that appeared in THE SUMMIT COUNTY JOURNAL were altered to spell Breck's name "Breckenridge" rather than "Breckinridge," to make it conform to the name of the town (Breckenridge, Colorado) where the Journal was published.

"A Elkins Never Surrenders" was received by Otis Adelbert Kline (REH’s agent) on August 13, 1934.
OAK sent it to V. I. Cooper (New York representative)
on August 14, 1934.
On August 17, 1934, it was rejected by Fiction House (ACTION STORIES).
On November 24, 1934, it returned to OAK and was forwarded back to REH the same day.
On December 4, 1934, OAK received
“A Elston to the Rescue” from REH.
OAK sent it to J. E. Miller (New York representative) on December 8, 1934.
OAK's logs show the story sold to STAR WESTERN on June 2, 1936. It was published as “The Curly Wolf of Sawtooth.”
A list of sales by Otto Binder
(New York representative) shows that he sold the story in May 1936.
The published title is likely from the STAR WESTERN editors.
