“A Elston to the Rescue”
is an REH rewrite of "A Elkins Never
Surrenders." See the history below. The version titled “The Curly Wolf of Sawtooth” features Bearfield Elston. "A Elkins Never Surrenders" was received by Otis Adelbert Kline (REH’s agent) on August 13, 1934. OAK sent it to V. I. Cooper (New York representative) on August 14, 1934. On August 17, 1934, it was rejected by Fiction House (ACTION STORIES). On November 24, 1934, it returned to OAK and was forwarded back to REH the same day. On December 4, 1934, OAK received “A Elston to the Rescue” from REH. OAK sent it to J. E. Miller (New York representative) on December 8, 1934. OAK's logs show the story sold to STAR WESTERN on June 2, 1936. It was published as “The Curly Wolf of Sawtooth.” A list of sales by Otto Binder (New York representative) shows that he sold the story in May 1936. The published title is likely from the STAR WESTERN editors. |
In its first appearance, it was part of a bundle of works titled "Sketches".

ETCHINGS IN IVORY
Alternate Title: PROEM
This is the title of a collection of six prose poems that REH
typed all together.
It is also the title of the first of the prose poems in that collection.
When first published, Glenn Lord used the title of the first work ("Etchings
in Ivory") as the title for the collection.
The first poem was given the title "Proem" in that publication
and some subsequent publications.
The six prose poems are: "Etchings in Ivory," "Flaming Marble," "Skulls
and Orchids,"
"Medallions in The Moon,"
"The Gods That Men Forget," and "Bloodstones
and Ebony."
The listing below documents publications where the collection of six
poems are published together.
Refer to the individual poems for their publication appearances.
