There is also a short prose piece with the same title, but it is a completely different poem

There is also an alternate version of this poem.
In the alternate version, the 10th line is 'She broke the crystal gong of mortal pride"; and in the 12th line "took" is replaced with "claimed."

A later incomplete version, also untitled, is from a letter To Unknown Recipient, ca. late 1927, unsent (“Salaam; / Seems that you owe me a letter ...”)
The early incomplete untitled draft consists of lines 1-4, 9-16, 29-40, 45-48.

The later incomplete untitled draft consists of lines 1-16, 29-32, 45-48.

Mistakenly listed as "And Man was Given the Earth to Rule" in the Table of Contents of FANTASY BOOK.
This poem was included in the proposed poetry collection IMAGES OUT OF THE SKY by REH, Tevis Clyde Smith, and Lenore Preece, as "For Man Was Given the Earth to Rule."
The title "The Old Gods Brood" is from Glenn Lord, as the first version of this poem he saw as an untitled typescript
.
An earlier untitled draft also exists for this poem.
The draft contains one additional line as well as other wording differences.
