Notes
Prepared by John Bullard.
Original typescript pages as well as the letter from Harry Bates are from the Glenn Lord Collection.
E-text for the first published version provided by Paul Herman.

Draft 1 is incomplete and only consists of pages 9-14.
These pages roughly correspond to the pages in Draft 2 starting on page 9 and running to page 16.
Draft 2 is complete and 20 pages long.

From the Bates letter, it appears that Draft 2 is not the typescript that REH sent to him, but may be close to it.
It is not presently known where in the story creation these two drafts fit in - whether there were drafts before Draft 1, in-between Draft 1 and Draft 2, and how many came after Draft 2 before the final version was published.

First appearance of Drafts 1 and 2.
